Finn Bálor’s Rib Injury Is Why the WrestleMania 42 Match Became a Street Fight

Finn Bálor went into WrestleMania 42 hurt, and the match card change wasn’t just a creative decision — it was a medical one.

Bálor vs. Dominik Mysterio was originally booked as a straight singles match. By the time the show rolled around, it had been converted into a Street Fight. Turns out, Bálor had suffered a rib injury heading into the event, and the stipulation change was made specifically because of that.

Bálor opened up about it on Chris Van Vliet’s show, confirming the Street Fight stipulation was added directly in response to the injury. A Street Fight gives you more flexibility — slower pace when needed, using the environment to tell the story, leaning on weapons and brawling instead of athletic chain wrestling that could put more stress on damaged ribs.

It’s a smart workaround that WWE has used before with banged-up talent. If a guy can’t bump and wrestle at full speed, you change the environment so the match still works. Bálor working as The Demon adds another layer to that — the character naturally fits a more violent, chaotic setting, so the stipulation switch probably felt organic to fans watching without knowing the backstory.

Bálor has had an injury-riddled run over the past few years. He tore his shoulder at SummerSlam 2016 on the night he won the Universal Championship, forcing him to vacate the title the very next day. Since returning to the main roster more recently as part of The Judgment Day, he’s dealt with additional physical setbacks that have interrupted his momentum more than once.

Dominik Mysterio has been one of WWE’s best heel acts over the last two years, and putting him in a Street Fight with Demon Finn was always going to deliver something worth watching regardless of the circumstances. Dom has leaned all the way into the cowardly, conniving character work, which makes any brawl stipulation work in his favor — he can cheat freely and it fits perfectly.

What makes this situation interesting is that fans watching WrestleMania 42 probably just assumed the Street Fight was added for drama or escalation purposes. The real reason was Bálor’s body not being 100 percent. That’s the part of pro wrestling that doesn’t always make it to the surface — guys work through stuff constantly, and the creative team has to pivot around physical limitations without tipping off the audience.

Bálor talking about it publicly now gives a fuller picture of how that WrestleMania match came together. It wasn’t just a stipulation upgrade. It was an accommodation that let him compete at all.

Whether Bálor’s ribs have fully healed and what his status looks like going forward will be worth tracking. He’s the kind of performer who elevates whatever program he’s placed in, and a healthy Finn Bálor — Demon or otherwise — is a different weapon entirely for WWE to work with on the road past WrestleMania season.
