If you slept on AAA’s Noches de los Grandes last night, you missed something special. Chad Gable and Ludwig Kaiser delivered what’s quietly going down as one of the best WWE-tied matches of the year, and they didn’t need a WrestleMania card to do it.
This was mask vs. mask. Stakes don’t get bigger in lucha libre. Twelve thousand sold-out fans in Mexico watched Ludwig Kaiser walk out with the El Grande Americano mask, and Chad Gable walk out without one. Let that sink in.
We’re talking about two guys who, not too long ago, were getting written off as comedy acts on the main WWE roster. Gable as the “Ode to Greatness” mid-card lifer. Kaiser as Gunther’s right-hand suit who couldn’t get out from under that shadow. And now here they are, in a sold-out Mexican arena, putting on a clinic that had me on the edge of my seat the entire match.
Now I get why this didn’t happen on a WrestleMania card. They needed the space. They needed time to tell the story without the spotlight pressure. AAA gave them the canvas, the crowd, and the cultural moment. They painted with it.
The mask matters. El Grande Americano isn’t just a gimmick. It’s a torch. Gable carried it through one of the most surprising heel arcs WWE has run in years. Kaiser taking it means the character lives on, but with a different voice behind the mask. And here’s where it gets spicy: this has to be Kaiser going for the AAA Championship. There’s no other reason to put that mask on his face. He’s going all the way.

Dominik Mysterio is the obvious target. The AAA scene revolves around him right now, and if Kaiser is wearing the mask, the collision is coming. So Dom, hope you’re ready, my brother.
And shoutout to Undertaker for whatever role he played behind the curtain on this one. The pacing, the build, the finish. Mark Calaway’s fingerprints were all over it. The Deadman is quietly shaping the next era of WWE storytelling and nobody’s talking about it enough.
