MJF just put half a million dollars on the table, and all Sammy Guevara has to do is take the AEW World Championship from Darby Allin.
On this week’s AEW Collision, MJF announced he will pay Sammy Guevara $500,000 if Sammy beats Darby when the two square off for the title. The match is set for the May 16th episode, and now there is a whole lot more riding on it than just the belt.
Darby has been one of the most active champions AEW has had in a while. Since winning the AEW World Championship at Dynasty, he has already made five title defenses. That is a guy who is not hiding behind the belt. He is out there putting it on the line, and now he has to deal with both Sammy and whatever MJF is cooking behind the scenes.
And you know MJF does not throw money around without an angle attached. The Salt of the Earth does not just write checks out of generosity. There is something in this for him, and it is pretty obvious he wants Darby off the throne so he can position himself for a shot down the road. Using Sammy as a hired gun to do it is exactly the kind of chess move MJF lives for.
Sammy Guevara is a interesting piece in all of this. He has spent years in AEW bouncing between fan favorite runs and full heel turns, and right now the cash offer puts him right back in a morally complicated spot. Does he take the money? Does he try to win the title for himself and cut MJF out? The layers are actually there if AEW lets the story breathe.
